Top 5 Romances

1) Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind – Surrealist Sci-Fi film that chronicles the breakdown of a relationship. It’s so wonderful to see a romance that isn’t sappy and cliche but feels realisitic. It’s also excellent to see a breakup that is complex. All too often we see movies where one person is clearly a villain and hero, and on occassion a sympathetic villain but a villain nonetheless. That’s not how real life works, and it’s so boring to see something two-dimensional. This was a breath of fresh air and Jim Carrey of course is a delight to watch.

2) Her – Odd, fantastic Sci-Fi that really knows how to convery loneliness in such an empathetic way. Its soundtrack is amazing and is equally as odd. Her is easily one of my favourite movies and I recommend any film lover to watch Her. And if you have already seen it, then this is your reminder to rewatch it.

3) Dirty Dancing – An absolute classic! Great music, great acting and great dancing. Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Grey have realistic chemistry between each other, and there are so many memorable moments from this movie. From “don’t put baby in the corner” to the ending lift dance, it’s a tremendous movie and a nostalgic night in.

4) Lars and The Real Girl – I cannot tell you how much I love this movie. As someone who had only ever known Ryan Gosling to be in movies like The Notebook, it was great to see him act in a surreal and melancholic movie. Similar to Her, the movie follows a lonely man

5) Call me by your name – It’s so great to see an LGBT+ movie that celebrates the love between two same sex couple. It gives the LGBT+ community a romance that heterosexual people have had, one that just focuses on the relationship between two people and treats them no differently to a straight couple. We get to see a same sex couple that isn’t being oppressed or shut out for being LGBT+. Not that movies that cover the discrimination queer people face are wrong or boring, it’s just great to have a mixture of movies
